How to Make Internal Controls Interesting, Meaningful, and Effective

Risks and internal controls go hand in glove. Risk assessment efforts look at what can go wrong while controls are all about how to make sure it doesn’t happen. So easy in theory – but what’s the big disconnect? The answer is when the controls are poorly designed and/or the humans responsible for control execution fail due to a short list of recurring and easily avoidable reasons.

In this session, we’ll build a list of actions for auditors and managers to make controls come alive, be much more effective, and have lasting impact and meaning. Short on theory and deep into proven steps, come prepared to listen, share, and act.

• Understand the critical relationship between business risks and internal controls.
• Analyze ‘why’ a control is important before pushing ‘what’ to do and ‘how’ to do it.
• Explore the impact of both procedural and human control components.
• Recognize the common reasons controls become less effective and too often fail.
• Understand how auditors can teach controls purpose and execution thru simple ‘How do you know…’ questions.
